Vintage
Evaluation
When the project was introduce to us, we were told we could
pick any one of these eras; 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s or 60’s. As for me; I
chose the 1920’s. I picked this one because it was the start of the Jazz era. I
think that the 1920’s were full of amazing things which is why I decided that
this was my era I was going to look at for this vintage project.
For my
research I looked at a number of aspects from the 1920’s. These include;
Inventions, fashion, transport, art, music, literature, science, toys, movies,
Disney, a 1920-29 events timeline & 3 of the presidents from 1920’s. The 3
I presidents I looked at were; 28th, 29th & 30th.
Within my era the two main cultural influences are Jazz and art deco. As most
people will Jazz became very well known in the 1920’s. There were many different
jazz artists which were big in the 20’s but for time management reasons I chose
4 to research in detail for my sketchbook. These are as the following: Fats
Waller, Florence Mills, Paul Whiteman & Sara Martin. Fats Waller was and
still is a very well-known jazz pianist and singer. Florence Mills, during her
active years was a cabaret singer, dancer and comedian; known for her sparkling
stage occurrence. Then I studied Paul Whiteman. He was a band leader, a composer,
an orchestral director and also a jazz violinist. The last musician I looked at
was a woman called, Sara Martin. She was a blues singer. In her time one of the
most current of the characteristic blues singers. The other cultural influence
of the 1920’s was art deco. This is a style of embellishment that was
particularly popular in the 1930s and uses unpretentious shapes and lines and
strong colours. I like art deco very
much because it has given the world some amazing and unique things around the
world such as; the Chrysler Building. This is the most famous piece of art deco
in the world in my opinion.
Maxfield Parrish, C. Coles Phillips and also
William Van Alen were the artist/designers whom which I have selected to study.
Parrish was a painter & illustrator who lived through the 1920’s. Some of
his work includes; The Knave of Hearts: The King Samples the Tarts, Daybreak
& Golden Hour. The Knave of Hearts was finished in 1924 with oil paints as
was Daybreak which was completed in 1922. Phillips was an artist and
illustrator who died 13th June 1927. Phillips' works appeared in the
1921 and 1922 publications of the U. S. Naval Academy yearbook, Lucky Bag. The
other artist I research was called William Van Alen; was an American architect.
He was best known for being the designer of the Chrysler Building in New York
City and Former Childs Restaurant in Washington, DC. The art movement that I
have studied for this project was surrealism. This is a cultural movement that
arose in the early 1920s, and is best recognized for its visual artworks and
literatures. An example of surrealism would be Max Ernst, The Elephant Celebes
(created in 1921) Tate, in London. Other examples include; a cover of the first
issue of La Révolution surréaliste, December 1924 & André Masson, automatic
drawing, complete in 1924, placed in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
In my
sketchbook I have used different media on each page; these are mostly for my
backgrounds. The media’s I have used are as follows; tissue paper, parcel
paper, newspaper, black painted paper, rainbow painted paper, newspaper print,
clear plastic, bubble wrap, duct tape, parcel tape, cut out black paper, yellow
painted paper & plain paper.
On each page I used lots of different
materials for effectiveness. For example; on my fashion page it has a newspaper
background and the images are a mixture of photographs from the internet
showing 1920’s hair styles, & drawn picture on tracing paper which have
been painted and outlined. Also on my movies page, I used parcel tape for my
background and then for the images I again got them from the internet and stuck
them one with glue. The information that’s stuck on with parcel tape was also
printed from the internet but for these I coffee stained them to give them a
vintage look. Then for the information in the brown envelopes, I wrote my
information from the internet on to fabric with a felt pen. For the annotations
on each page I chose many ways to display them to the reader. For example on my
inventions pages; I wrote on masking tape, I wrote on old paper and made a slot
for it to keep it safe. I also took an image from the internet for my bubble
gum invention and cut around the shape, and then I cut out some paper, painted
it pink and stuck it on the page above the image so that I could flip out to
reveal the image. I also used envelopes to place my information in to. Other
ways I displayed my annotations were in booklets I handmade and then used sharpies
to write on them & correspondingly on mini envelopes.
For my time
management I think that I have managed it well but also could have been better.
All in all I should have only has 6 weeks on this project but I believe that I have
had about 8. This was due to the fact of me having time off as I had my son
when the class began this one so I started late.
Overall I am both satisfied
and not with the outcome of my sketchbook. Yes because I got to do everything in
my sketchbook that I wished to get in it, but in equally not as I could be been
more consistent with my presentation.
